This position exists to provide support and assistance to Ophthalmologist in providing direct care and ophthalmologic testing. This position obtains subjective medical information documenting findings in the medical record, administers certain eye medications under the supervision of the Ophthalmologist, and assists with in-office surgical procedures.
Essential Functions:
Rooms patients and obtains subjective medical information documenting findings in the medical record
Maintains competency and performs ophthalmologic testing within scope of certification, administering eye medications, documenting findings and communicating with the physician when assessment is required
Communicates with patient, physicians, and other support staff, distributes educational materials to patients as directed. Schedules appointments and follow-up appointments
Maintains manual equipment, disinfecting and sterilizing as appropriate Competency in the use and trouble shooting of department automated equipment reporting problems to the physicians and team lead expeditiously
Assists physicians with scribing in the progress notes accurately
Sets up instrumentation for procedures and minor surgeries, assisting the physicians as directed and within scope of practice
Basic Qualifications:
2000 hours of opthalmological experience
High School Graduate or equivalent.
Graduate of certified Ophthalmologic Assistant program.
Evidence of completion of one of the following options to qualify for certification as a COA per the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology: Graduate of a formal clinical training program; Graduate of a formal training program and work experience; Completion of independent study course and work experience
Current certification as Ophthalmic Assistant by JCAHPO or ability to successfully pass the certification within 6 months of hire.
Current BCLS Certification per American Heart Association guidelines.
Documented COT competent per department competencies within 18 months of COA certification.
Proficient in Ophthalmological testing per certification.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
PC and Windows applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited Certified Assistant program preferred.
COT certification preferred within 2 years of COA certification.
