Park Plaza Hospital has a 14-bed surgical
intensive care unit (ICU)
General surgery and open-heart surgery patients
are managed postoperatively in the ICU.
Common types of surgical patients are those who
have undergone thoracotomies, craniotomies,
abdominal surgery, gastroplasties, stereotactic
biopsies, carotid endarterectomies, aortic valve
repairs, and femoral-popliteal bypasses. This
unit is staffed with ACLS-trained critical care
nurses.
The ICU also sees the wide range of medical
patients, common being congestive heart failure,
stroke, acute myocardial infarction, pneumonia,
respiratory distress, gastrointestinal bleeding,
etc. and anti-arrhythmic infusions,
transcutaneous pacing, continuous venous-venous
hemofiltration, antibiotic therapy and advanced
cardiac life support are among the services
provided in the ICU.
