Job Description:
 

A nurse practitioner is certified under section 6910 of the New York State Education Law and licensed as a registered nurse. A nurse practitioner provides acute/primary health care in accordance with written policies approved by nursing and medical administration.

Description::
The nurse practitioner/ physician assistant is responsible to the Chairman of Orthopaedics or his designee. All duties are performed within the scope of practice of a NYS NP/Physician Assistant. This position involves care on the orthopaedic inpatient floor(s), including PACU, ICU and consult patients. NP/PA are required to manage post operative spine patients and exisiting comorbidities. Experience in pain management helpful but not necessary . Candidate should be willing to teach patients, family and staff and be an integral part of the

Responsibilities

Assess the health status of patients with comprehensive health history and physical examination on new or emergent patients, and during post operative assessments
Initiates appropriate therapeutic laboratory and diagnostic testing and procedures, consultations
Prescribes and manages medication regimens, interprets findings and plans for current care in association with the medical attending and covering resident
Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record
Responds to emergencies on the inpatient unit / PACU
Attends mandatory discharge planning meetings four times/week to foster continuity of care and completes required referrals and visiting nurse referral forms and/or acute and sub-acute transfer forms
Completes sign out of all patients in the computer, and with the resident on call for continuity of care
Updates documentation for quality indicators, including morality and morbidity monthly reports .Represents spine service at monthly QA meetings as necessary
Supports the mission, vision philosophy and goals of the department of Orthopaedics and the Medical Center

Job Qualifications:
 

1.Ability to perform history taking.
2.Ability to perform physical assessment techniques.
3.Ability to interpret and apply principles of nursing research utilization.
4.Ability to manage and coordinate a patient caseload.
5.Work within a collaborative agreement/protocols with a physician and health care team in area of practice
6.Demonstrate the following minimum requirements:
a.Licensure: New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse.
b.State Certification: Certified by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner as follows:
1)Is a graduate of New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent OR is certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination.
2)Has completed a pharmacy component of not less than the required semester hours or the equivalent AND has been instructed in New York State and federal Laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3-hour course).
3)Has a collaborative practice agreement with a physician and designated protocols, both filed with the New York State Department of Education.
c.Education: Master's degree program designed to prepare a registered nurse to provide acute/primary health care services or the successful completion of an approved supplemental education program, i.e., post-Masters NP certificate.
d.Experience: Previous progressive experience relevant to the area of clinical practice.
e.Professional certification by relevant professional organization preferred.
